the old and the new

i ushered in the new year rather silently. lazing on my sister's couch, watching another episode of 'Doctor Who'...when someone in the family shouted "HAPPY NEW YEAR".

hugs and kisses and wishes of blessings were exchanged and things went back to normal. my mum went back to packing her suitcase along with the other visitors, getting ready to take the first flight out from perth to singapore in the new year.

so they were dropped off along with tight hugs and kisses and i went home alone in the new year of 2008.

my first day of 2008 is no different from any other day in 2007. i still feel the same.

but am i the same?

i think about the many new year resolutions that i made in 2007 and i notice that there are only about a handful that i have actually done...which i am in a way proud of.

the television is not on as much as it used to and i suspect that its mainly because im at work most of the time, but also i may come to a point where i am more selective of the programs that i watch and just switch off when there is some random rubbish, where previously i would just let every thing sink it and cause my iq to go down by a notch or two.

it has been my intention for a long time to sponsor a child, but due to my limited finances in the past, i never got around to doing it. and i still haven't...but instead, i have been donating to the united nations refugee fund where the same amount of money goes a little bit longer. where the same amount of money, affects not just one child but many families.

my shelf is decreasing in it's capacity. i have started to buy books and read them. don't think i have read this many books in the past few years of my life that i have had in 2007. don't know when was the last time i bought a book to read prior to 2007.

i finally got my first credit card while im in my twenty something. some have gasped at the fact that one of my aims was ever to even get a credit card. but understand this...it is the fact that i was rejected several times that made me want to get it more. the credit card somehow became a symbol for me, in some way, a symbol of independence. no more taking allowances from mummy or daddy or big sister. i earn my own money now.

so thats 4 resolutions from 2007 that i managed to keep. but there are many more that seems to always be there.

i still weigh the same. maybe even heavier, what with all the Christmas food and chocolates and sweets. i still don't feel happy with the way i look, the way i feel, the way i am. physically. i don't remember when was the last time i felt good about myself.

old friends and new are still not any closer. my emailing frequency becomes dependent on my mood. my brilliant plan to start snail mailing again has not taken off, with pretty paper and envelopes still waiting to be bought.

the most different and somewhat exciting thing that i had done during 2007 was to take up a basic sailing course. im not even sure if i will be keeping it up or whether i would even have the time to keep it up. i enjoy it but time constraints and motivation is somewhat lacking.

4 against 3.

maybe things are in my favor. it is a record for me to even have kept some of my resolutions to begin in the first place.

maybe i am changing. slowly. year by year.

2007 was the year of abundance.

may 2008 be the year of change.

live life differently if you want change to happen.

happy new 2008 everyone!
