Recent Events
I am not lacking in inspiration, but rather, in creative juices flowing into the crevices of the thing that we call the brain. I can get really technical here...but I think, I shouldn’t even try, for fear of getting berated by some(one). The last time I tried to venture telling anyone anything physiological, “Stop it with your medical stuff...” was the response I got, or at least somewhere along those lines. Mind you, I was drunk, but then I couldn’t have been that drunk to remember that comment to shut me up.
It has been an interesting few days. There were things that happened, that had me thinking, “Oh...I have to put that down in my blog”, but forgetfulness happens to the best of us. However, I have a small list of events that I can remember that some may truly appreciate. Firstly, Thursday saw my ‘virgin’ attempt to bake my well-known chocolate chunk cookies right here, for the first time in my own home. The accolades of praise for my baking skills herald from the throes of people (more like 4 people to be precise) residing in the quaint little suburb of Parkville in Melbourne, who unwittingly became my test subjects for my true virgin attempt at baking the cookies. So, now that it has been a tried and tested recipe, one would have thought that I might have become a master in some way, in this baking chocolate chunk cookies business right? Wrong. Thursday night saw me apologizing to my unsuspecting guest for the unwelcome presentation of my infamous chocolate chunk cookies that came along with an added taste, of which we tried painstakingly to reduce, by prying off the tracing paper sticking to the base of the cookies. (Where was QC when I needed her? MABEL!) It all boiled down to the sugar I figured. I used castor sugar instead of white sugar as told. However, as my highly bemused guest tactfully pointed out, whether it’s castor or white sugar, they both are sugar, and when they melt, they are all the same... Yes, they both are sugar, but they both are of different consistencies! It has to be the sugar, I mean, what else can it be? It was a feat, to try to rationalize my theory with someone who was so amused with my reaction to my failed attempt at my cookies, that my behavior must have been significant enough to be detailed on a video clip. Damn those handphone cameras... Nonetheless, it couldn’t have been that bad, seeing how my guest has survived and to tell the tale, that even had the words ‘nice cookies’ thrown into it. But still, the mystery goes unsolved...until... Monday saw the patriotic spirits of some certain Singaporeans rise to an all time high. In order to fuel those never quelling national pride that showed itself in the colors that they paraded themselves in, I decided to have a second go at baking, yes, my chocolate chunk cookies. Chocolate chunk cookies...chocolate chunk cookies...chocolate chunk chookies...it just sort of rolls of your tongue doesn’t it...till you realize that there is a typo, that I shall just leave it as it is. So with flour and cocoa and everything else on my sweater, I suddenly found myself turning to my housemate Jennifer and asked... “2 ½ cups of flour, that would mean 5 cups of ½ cups of flour and not 3 right?” It’s proven. Gwen can’t count, and yes, sugar is sugar, whether white or castor. |
